Personals work on structure; karma gates don't stop bots

Text-first personals on Reddit sort people by structured posts, not photos, but reputation gates such as karma no longer stop bots. In 2026 Reddit itself moved to human verification for accounts that look automated, while removing about 100,000 accounts a day.

The finding

Reddit's personals communities, such as r/r4r, are a live test of text-first, interest-first discovery. Posts follow a fixed title pattern with age, what the poster is looking for and a location. The body has to carry real detail and questions a reader can answer. The research found that this structure makes intent clear in a way a photo grid does not.

The weak point is trust. Karma and account-age gates were meant to filter out fakes, but bots farm karma faster than new people earn it, and friendship communities report heavy bot and spam traffic. In March 2026 Reddit announced human verification for accounts that look automated. It said it already removes about 100,000 accounts a day.

Why it mattered to the design

Peoplarium copied the structure and dropped the gate. Personals live inside interest hubs as structured posts with an intent, a place and a plan, not as a swipe deck. Karma is replaced by a private attendance score built from meetups people actually show up to. Verification comes before chat: a member passes a liveness check before messaging anyone, so the inbox is gated, not the reading. Chat flags talk of money, crypto and pressure to move off the platform, the patterns behind most scams on open personals.

How it was checked

AI research agents read the r/r4r rule posts and several community threads. Reddit pages could not be opened from our checking environment, so the rule details the research quoted, such as word minimums, posting limits and karma thresholds, are left out. The bot claim was checked against TechCrunch's report of Reddit's March 2026 announcement, which gives the removal figure. Community "quotes" in the research were paraphrased by the model and are not used.
